funny ol' comics?

From a few years back. I was in a bad way. It was like a floating octopus was always making me drink. Thank goodness for the talking crow! Everything I did in those days seems like a cry for help. Hoo haw! CLICK TO ENLARGE.

not even rotoscoped

I used to do some very primitive animation and this was my animation “company”s logo, stolen from Rocket Robin Hood, this image of Friar Tuck. My colour sense, as ever, is impeccable.

my cat

Our good old cat, Moocow, had cancer and her leg had to be amputated. She's adapting amazingly well, but at present her butt has a reverse-mohawk thing revealing the giant seam of stitches. She will be glad when the fur grows back, I think.

my grandpa

I borrowed this photo while visiting my parents this weekend. I've always loved this photo of my Dad's Father, Robert Ollmann. There's a sad drawing I did of this picture hanging on my parents' walls. He made all these little animal sculptures and sometimes, when we were kids, my brother and I would find these clay creatures when we were digging in the yard. My Dad always speaks fondly of his old man, that he was a gentle and eccentric gentleman who died young, who came from money but literally died digging ditches who always wore a tie under his overalls. I always wished I could have met him.

a sketch

I feel sick about how shitty I draw, so if I ever see something good in the sketchbooks, I'm gonna post it. Here's my kid eating breakfast, looking like he's seen as much of life as Charles Bukowski.

I met Tomi Ungerer!!!!

So I met Tomi Ungerer, which was a very big thing for me. He's 80 years old and his line is fluid (see book below) and he's sharp as hell and charming. Thanks old Tom Devlin for letting me know about this. Also, see more pics and Devlin's post on this (leave the internet to the pros is my motto)HERE. (Scroll down, I can't figure out how to link to the specific post. Sorry.)

Drawing Concert in Quebec city

So I did this drawing concert with good old Philippe Girard and these fantastic musicians: Andrée Bilodeau, Fred Lebrasseur, Mathieu Girard et Todd Picard. The prospect was terrifying, drawing in front of people, but it was fun and the concert was great. have a look at the pics on facebook:. (ugh)

NEW BOOK DONE!!!! A creepy puppet shows the pages…

Well, Here's my new assistant, Tom Talker (I know he looks haunted, but he's a hell of an inker.) showing off the stack of pages for the book we just finished drawing. It's called “Burden.” It's about belief and delusion and alien abduction. Yeah, it's a nine panel grid. Sigh.
Here, ol' TT takes a well-deserved rest among the pages. Now I can spend a day erasing pencil lines and then re-draw 48% of the pages. ha ha haaaaaaaaaa. But seriously. I will have to.

Doug Wright Award Invite

LOOK at what came in the mail! A PERSONALIZED comic book Invitation to the Doug Wright Awards, drawn by the talented and jovial cartoonist Keith Jones. Holy Crap, these awards are a class act all the way. It's an honour to be nominated for an award named after my childhood hero, Doug Wright. When I realized that Doug Wright lived in my same city and wasn't American and still made published cartoons, I really think that was one of my first steps on the path to being a cartoonist. And, oi, I'm nominated in the company of giants. Well, it's nice just to be nominated… Anyway, not tooting my horn showing this, just wanted to show Keith's sweet work and how the DWA's operate. Click to see a larger version of the whole thing.

Spanish

Hey, look: Midlife has been published in Spanish by the nice people at Ediciones La Cúpula
Cuarentón means 40-something, I am told, which is a nice version of the title.
You can click on the pages to read a page of Midlife in Spanish. Oh, un pequeño bebé diciendo: “puta mierda, papá.” INDEED!
